The remarkable story behind the development of The GetSetGo Method

It started in late 1999, when my elderly parents wanted to move from chilly Melbourne to warm and sunny Perth, where one of my sisters was living. A unit became available in a retirement village close to her and they decided to take it.

I couldn’t let my parents tackle the move on their own; so I rolled up my sleeves and offered to project manage it for them—which was gladly received!

What I decided to do was to really make it as easy and stress-free for them as possible—so that all they’d have to do is take a suitcase each, get on a plane and go and stay with my sister until their new home was ready for them 

And that’s how it worked out. Once they flew out of Melbourne I packed everything they wanted to keep, disposed of everything they didn’t want anymore, arranged the removalists to transport their goods. Then I flew over to Perth and supervised the unpacking. Even down to clothing into cupboards, crockery and cutlery into the kitchen, paintings on the walls, furniture in the right places, linen into the linen press and food in the fridge. All the while my parents enjoying a nice holiday with my sister in her beach-side home. 

They were absolutely blown away when less than two weeks after they got on the plane in Melbourne, we took them to their new home—and everything was in place as if they’d been living there for ages! At no stage either in Melbourne or in Perth did they even see a packing carton!

The thing that made this possible was the fact that we started by working out a plan for the whole exercise and getting it down on paper, well in advance, before we began doing anything. When we had the plan worked out my parents could then relax because they knew what was going to be done, when it was going to happen and where they would eventually be settled again.

It also happened to be the 21^st time in their marriage that my parents were moving house—so they knew very well what was involved!

For me, it was one of the most satisfying things I’d done in my life. To see their absolute amazement when they walked into their new home—all set up and ready to enjoy. The appreciation they expressed was fantastic!
